500-ish Literary Magazines for Short Fiction

Students often ask me what the “best" literary magazines were. At one point, I realized that I didn't actually know, right after I agreed to teach an intensive class on the subject. Where are the best places to submit, and according to what standards? I stumbled across Clifford Garstang's incredibly helpful blog ranking Pushcart prizewinning magazines. But then I wondered, what about Best American Short Stories? So I found John Fox’s excellent site. And the O. Henry site, which used to list the same. Then I wondered why all the rankings were so different from each other. And then I wondered if I had any Valium left over from my prescription 10 years ago. And then I remembered spreadsheets.
So this is a ranking of magazines that I've been using and sharing with students for years. It’s organized according to the following elements:
Score, calculated according to prizes won in recent years: The Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prizes (from Clifford Garstang's amazing blog—check it out), and O. Henry Awards. BASS scores are weighted more heavily due to their influence and reach (don't get mad, Pushcart et al!). Given this methodology, this list is primarily useful for literary short fiction, although I have a genre sidebar tier at the very end, in case you write speculative/sci-fi/fantasy/mystery/sports/fairy tales/other genre stories that don’t apply to mainstream prizes.
Circulation. Who doesn’t want more readers?
Money. Magazines that pay often (but not always!) have more clout and longevity.
Coolness. Some magazines got a bump up because they’re especially good to their authors or readers. And some got a bump down because they did something crappy like publish hardly any women, or charge $26 for a submission. I also separated out magazines that don’t accept simultaneous submissions (Tier 3b) because many writers skip those magazines.
New in 2023:
We’re definitely seeing effects from the pandemic in this year’s ranking. Some magazines have leaped far ahead (hello, Paris Review and McSweeney’s), whereas others have struggled, likely due to financial and staffing hardships. As universities defund the humanities, long-standing magazines like Alaska Quarterly Review and others are imperiled. Support your favorites by subscribing!
Since 2020, reading periods and payment rates also seem to change frequently. Always check the site’s submission information! And please feel free to let me know what I got wrong.
Due to the homogenizing influence of the internet, we now have 5 tiers instead of 7, but still the same number of magazines as before. Users frequently request that I include links to the magazines; someday when I have a ton of time, I’ll include them, but for now, best to just Google “submissions” and the magazine’s name.

This ranking has 5 tiers. The order of the magazines within each tier means something until Tier 5, and then it’s mostly random. I bumped paying magazines to the top of Tiers 4 and 5. Genre writers, see genre sidebar tier at the very end. “Monthly visits to site” are all calculated via the same source, urlm.co, if those numbers are available.
